Boardwalk 1.0. This house expands when necessary: every major room opens to a boardwalk, deck, or screen porch. The design showcases the structural frame and is organized as a simple, almost toy-like gabled house that uses "clipped on elements" such as stairs, a saddlebag-like screened porch, a covered walkway, and a fireplace to express changing functions. It's a contemporary interpretation of the early American "dogtrot" house, which is a covered breezeway between two enclosed rooms. The plan provides a way to cinch house and site together for easy indoor-outdoor living. Ross Anderson uses ordinary materials in elegant ways to produce an architecture of simplicity and sophistication.
