Proximity. Glass gables connect the front and rear of this updated suburban ranch house to nature. Designer Dan Tyree explains: "The central living corridor opens on the front and back to allow the breeze through. The kitchen extends to the rear patio for outdoor living." Inspiration for the design came from mid-century modern plans, especially those of ranch house popularize Cliff May, who often extended the main gable to define and shade an outdoor room. Note the built-in grill under the overhang, making the rear terrace a family hangout in good weather.
