The "Colonial Revival" was an amalgam of many national styles and building traditions, traditions that later composed themselves into unique sub-styles as each style was refined and improved. The Coral Gables house (designed by Althea Merrick, mother of real-estate developer George Merrick) is prototypical of the Colonial Revival. The Merricks, New Englanders transplanted to Miami, Florida, dressed a naive Georgian Palladian, New England Farmhouse in local Coral Stone, covered the gabled roof with red-clay tiles, and called it "Mediterranean" although it was, in fact, a sentimental idealization of the American recolonization of Florida. George Merrick would eventually develop the family's 3,000 acre citrus grove into the town of Coral Gables whose tree-lined boulevards, gorgeous monumental buildings, and lush parks were organized around quaint colonial villages: French, Italian, Dutch South African, Chinese, Spanish-Mexican, et cetera. Coral Gables is among the most successful metamorphosis of the assorted Colonial Revivals into the Beaux Arts City Beautiful.

Characteristics Many colonial building styles were reintroduced following the pride of accomplishment demonstrated by the Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial Exposition. Some styles were reborn regionally, others, notably the Georgian and Federal styles, enjoyed a national Renaissance. Each style imitated the originals; however, you will notice the difference between the machine-made detailing of the colonial revivals and the hand-carved details of the colonial originals. Features Merrick Grove refines Coral Gables' folksy, New England Georgian exterior and retains the charming Southern amenities. Here the wrap-around porch can be left open, screened, or enclosed at several places without losing the aesthetic effect, thus almost doubling the home's living area. The first floor public rooms are spacious, flooded with indirect sunlight, and designed for easy, comfortable living. The first floor master bedroom suite is large and adaptable: the bathroom, laundry, and closet can be enlarged, or a second room could be used as an additional bedroom or office. The three upstairs bedrooms have ample storage space and the common dormitory area would make a comfortable family room. Citrus trees would be an appropriate reminder of the original Coral Gables. |
