HOME BY DESIGN SHOWHOUSE 2004 454-5. This beautiful and uniquely designed 3 bedroom/2.5 bath home was built to exemplify many of the Not So BigĀ® principles featured in Sarah Susanka's book, Home By Design. Luxurious in feel, the home includes abundant windows, terraces and an expansive Sunroom, located beneath the home's iconic curved roof. The plan provides for a crawlspace, but the plan can also be converted to a full lower level, through integration of a basement stair case as seen in 454-7. The exterior of the home, with its horizontal lines, modest roof pitch, large overhangs, and centralized rectangular chimney, evokes a Prairie Style feel, while the floor plan is ideal for today's more informal lifestyle. Designer Notes

This design provides for an open yet intimate feel in the center of the home. Special use areas, such as the Away Room, Place of Your Own, and the Sun Room, are physically separated from the rest of the main level for privacy. The Master Bedroom boasts built-in corner window seats, a spacious walk-in dressing area, and access to the covered terrace. The upper part of the home contains two bedrooms, both with abundant windows tucked below the home's projecting Prairie Style roofline. The Sun Room, with its large windows, provides a seamless transition to the outdoors. Unlike a screen porch, it is included in the square footage totals of the home since it is part of the conditioned space. The tile floor and curved ceiling continue outside onto the adjoining terraces. Depending on your needs, this room is easily modified and converted to a screen porch, similar to our Home By Design Showhouse 2004-V version of this design. A special note about the room called A Place of Your Own: Since the original version of this home was built on a crawlspace foundation, Sarah very cleverly hid the home's mechanical system below the raised floor of this room. This allows an otherwise wasted volume of space to be used as a bonus room for meditation, a child's play room, storage etc. If for any reason the mechanical systems are moved to another location, the floor of this room is typically lowered, and the access from the stairs is moved to the mudroom. Since the garage is easily detached from the main home, locations for windows were provided. \
